A low-pressure system will produce showers and thunderstorms over the Great Lakes. Afternoon showers, thunderstorms will develop over portions of the Southwest. Regional forocast for noon today Tropical storm Bertha will be moving up the Eastern Seaboard causing heavy rain, gusty winds, and possible thunderstorms. The rain will continue Into the evening before tapering off.

Bertha to put new wrinkles on the face of forecasting According to the American Meteorological Society, most of its membership consists of meteorologists under age 50, with peak membership in the 30- to 40-year-old category. Although, demo-graphically, the country may be growing older, the weather profession has taken a more youthful turn. For broadcasters, the peak age group is even younger late 20s and early 30s. Maybe the energy of youth is needed to compete with the energy of the atmosphere. Actually, the younger look is probably more related to the ex- panded opportunities that appeared during the 1980s.
More young people took up the profession when the private sector and the government added hundreds of new jobs each year. But the weather pattern in recent days can turn somebody who is 30-something into 40-something right before our very eyes. Today, it's Bertha. Although the storm is arriving in weakened form, it will still have plenty of punch to it. Most of the state will be on the energetic right-hand sector where squalls can linger long after a hurricane has diminished to a tropical storm or -depression.
Winds will be strong enough to cause power failures, and the rain could pour down fast enough to deliver pockets of flooding. Small tornadoes could even occur in that sector. Today is going to be a long one. This storm is not an isolated event. Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes have occurred with unusual frequency so far this summer across our region.
Within a week, at least two tornadoes have been confirmed, and the action just seems to continue. After Bertha moves north of the area Sunday, a front will approach and become nearly stationary for several days. That will be enough to fire up scattered thunderstorms each day. If the front settles too close to us, we could have more outbreaks of severe weather. Somehow, that weather engine never seems to wind down it is ageless.
