I just downloaded and installed Linux Mint 20 Mate edition again. On first boot it appeared as if it was using AMDGPU driver and in control center/display it did show monitor as Laptop, though the additional resolutions weren't available. The update manager indicated many updates to be installed so I let it do so. I believe one of those was a new kernel. Well, it's back to showing "unknown" in the control center/display. I don't know if ANY of this has to do with a problem I am having again or not.
